Battery Storage Cost UK 2026: What You'll Actually Pay

Published by AFTA Electrical · May 2026 · Battery Storage

Home battery storage costs between £3,995 and £10,000+ depending on capacity, brand, and whether it's being paired with new solar or retrofitted to an existing system. The most popular sizes — 10–15kWh — typically run £5,500–£9,000 installed.

Popular Battery Systems Compared

Fox ESS

Strong all-rounder at a competitive price point. Good software, well-supported in the UK, available in multiple capacities. Our most commonly specified system for standard domestic retrofits.

SolaX

UK-based company with good local support. Popular with installers who want quick resolution when issues arise. Competitive on price for mid-range capacities.

Tesla Powerwall 3

The premium option. Excellent build quality, seamless integration with solar (especially if you have Tesla solar or SolarEdge), and a very good app. Premium price — expect to pay £2,000–£3,000 more than equivalent-capacity alternatives.

Does the 0% VAT Apply to Batteries?

Yes — if installed alongside solar, or as a standalone storage system by an certified installer. The rules changed in 2023 to extend 0% VAT to standalone battery storage (not just solar-paired systems). Your installer must hold installation certification for this to apply.

Payback Period for Battery Storage

Battery payback depends heavily on your electricity tariff. On a standard flat rate, payback is typically 8–12 years. On an Octopus Intelligent or similar time-of-use tariff — charging cheaply overnight and using stored power during peak hours — payback can drop to 5–7 years.

Battery storage without solar is viable but less effective. With solar it becomes very powerful: store excess midday generation, use it in the evening, and avoid expensive grid imports entirely on good solar days.

Retrofit vs New Install

Retrofitting a battery to an existing solar system requires checking inverter compatibility. If your existing inverter is not hybrid-ready, you'll need either a separate AC-coupled battery or a full inverter replacement. We assess this during survey — sometimes the most cost-effective solution is a full system upgrade rather than a retrofit.
