Solar Certification Explained: What It Is and Why It Matters

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is the government-recognised industry standard that certifies both the products used in renewable energy installations (panels, inverters, batteries) and the installers who fit them. If your solar or battery installer isn't properly certified and registered, you're taking on significant financial and legal risk.

What Installation Certification Means

A certified installer has been assessed against detailed competence and quality standards, holds appropriate qualifications for the work they're doing, and undergoes regular audits. The products they install must also be independently product-certified — which means the panels, inverters, and batteries have been independently tested and meet minimum performance and quality standards.

Why Certification Matters Financially

• 0% VAT: Solar and battery installations qualify for 0% VAT only when installed by a properly registered and certified contractor. Non-certified installations incur 20% VAT — that's an extra £1,400 on a £7,000 system.
• Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): You cannot register for SEG payments without an approved installation certificate. No certification = no export income for the life of the system.
• Insurance: Many home insurance policies require installation certification for renewable energy installations. An uncertified system may not be covered.
• Warranty: Manufacturer warranties on professionally installed products are typically 10–25 years. Non-certified installations may void these warranties.

How to Verify an Installer's Installation Certification

Every legitimate certified installer has a certificate number and appears on the government certification database at mcscertified.com. Search for the installer's company name or certificate number before signing any contract. If they don't appear or their certificate is expired, walk away.

Certification Schemes — What's the Difference?

• Microgeneration certification: Specific to microgeneration (solar, battery, heat pumps). Required for 0% VAT and SEG.
• NAPIT: Electrical competent person scheme. Required for all electrical installation work to be self-certified under Part P of the Building Regulations.
• TrustMark: Government-endorsed scheme covering quality and consumer protection across a wide range of trades. Includes dispute resolution.
